Keen Anticipation

I just looked at the lineup for The Open Ears Festival, which is a bi-yearly new music festival in our town. Classical, electronic, jazz, you name it. The last one was super- we saw Bang On A Can All Stars, Pamala Z, and DJ Spooky, plus another dozen performers of various types, over the festival week. This year, d. and I bought our full-pass tickets as soon as they were announced, but I hadn't really studied the lineup.

This year's festival includes Negativland, who do some really funny cultural criticism by resampling (they were almost sued out of existance by U2). The Bang On A Can All Stars are coming back, too. And as a bonus, the Canadian Chamber Ensemble is doing a piece based on Leonard Cohen, who I like quite a bit (and who I like even better when someone else sings him...)

Some friends were really excited about Diamanda Galas, not that I have any idea who she is. I believe either she or Negativland will be performing that night in the Kitchener city hall council chambers, a brilliant stroke of planning. It's a huge round room which deserves a more interesting performance than that of your typical city councilor. Enjoy...

PS: the book (http://blogcritics.org/archives/2003/09/11/002150.php) about the U2 lawsuit was great reading, if you haven't already perused it.

I really, really hope I can see the Negativland show. We're singing Spem in Alium that night in Hamilton, but that's the only song that we're doing. So ideally, I can just go, sing it, and then rocket home as fast as possible.

I hope.
