Google Street View is scary and awesome.

Google Street View has been busy.

As identified by [livejournal.com profile] gmaps_sights, Florence, Italy (that link is to the Fake David in front of Palazzo Vecchio. Hey, that looks familiar.)

(Can you find the Mormon missionaries?)

...Maybe over Christmas break I'll take a few hours, curl up with my laptop and some nice Italian wine, and go on tour.

Wow. Although I don't like their strapline - "why bother seeing the world for real?" Erm - because it's real?

It does however make me want to go there again. I am developing a long, long list of places to (re)visit.

Agreed on both points. Though the tagline isn't actually google streetview- that's Google Sightseeing, whose purpose is more specifically commentary on odd sights in google (such as locating monster specks of dust, or the largest islands within lakes within islands within lakes, for example...)

found them.
but then, I'd recognize that uniform anywhere, having grown up in several of their holy places.
some day I'll have to post the story of how my father got us put on the missionary black list (the do not even try to convert people at this house list) when I was in high school.

Vaguely related, when I joined the Army Reserves, it was with the 1st Royal New Brunswick Regiment. 1RNBR earned (http://regimentalrogue.tripod.com/battlehonours/bathnrinf/25-rnbr.htm) several battle honours in Italy, one of which was at the Battle of Naviglio Canal. The tradition was to drink cheap Italian wine and eat spaghetti on the anniversary, 12 December. Easy for me to remember, that's also my birthday, but difficult to attend as I always had exams.

They could now perhaps use Street View to project images of the site while they nom their spaghetti.

(And if you'd ever wondered why one of my t-shirts says "South Africa Platoon" on the back, that page will probably answer it.)

That one boy looks like he lost his tie. So sad.

I have tried using the street view to identify a new restaurant before going there several times. Usually my brain fails me by selecting the wrong things for visual identification. I'll wander up and down the block not recognizing it, and then realize "hey, wait, I'm looking for that big green truck with the graffiti on the back.. no way that's still here".
