Bye Dave

I just sent our fish tank out the door, along with the remaining Dave [1] and Dave's bicycle [2]. We've had between 1 and 20 of Dave for quite a while but since the tank was best suited for the living room, which we don't really live in (it's really a library / corridor to the dining room) and since we have a dog which completely meets our pet needs, having fish has felt superfluous for the last two years.

Of course, when we replace the cardboard box [3] in the living room with a fireplace in a few weeks, we may spend a lot more time in that room, making it well-suited to having a fish tank, but I think we'll do fine with a couple of rocking chairs, a throw-rug, and a dog at our feet.

I'm looking forward to being done with the last improvements we wanted on the first story of the house. Only three years after we've moved in.

[1] the correct plural of fish is fish, and the correct plural of Dave is Dave. We named them collectively Dave because of the Dr. Seuss poem (Did I ever tell you of Mrs. McCave / Who had 23 sons and she named them all Dave...)

[2] a tiny plastic bicycle, which we bought for Dave when Gloria Steinem got married. For further explanation, see here.

[3] The fireplace in our living room is currently a cardboard box. Somewhere I've got a photo... *rummage rummage* here. Covering that.

I would think having a cardboard box as a fireplace would be something of a safety hazard... but hey, what do I know.
I'm amused by the bicycle.

It has been amusing having the bicycle: the number of people who immediately got it turned out to be quite small.

The box is just a very, very large box (I think it held floor boards) covering over the fire box. We're not the type to have wood fires. But the fireplace that was there before was amazingly, horribly, shockingly, ugly. The box is much better.

But the one we're having built will be quite a bit better, still.

...some people have wood fireplaces, some people have gas fireplaces, we've been the early-adopters who have one of them cell-biomatter fiber (fibre?) fireplaces. You used to call it cardboard. Hah.

Plusses: It goes with any decor. And if you want a bigger fire, hey, just draw it bigger. :)

Er. OK, it's pretty ugly. But boy, it's better than it used to look, and this picture barely does it justice (before we moved in and got rid of the 3 shades of green in the living room): ugly green fireplace

...Of course, it follows that a man needs a woman like a bicycle needs a fish, but no-one ever points that out.

This is an excellent time of year to have a working fireplace; they're amazingly comforting to sit in front of. I've been vicariously enjoying the woodsmoke from my neighbours' fireplaces a great deal this fall.

Actually, a fish-profile and fins wouldn't be a bad idea for a bicycle. Maybe a man does need a woman like a bicycle needs a fish: as non-mandatory but still very helpful streamlining and safety option. Who knew?
