New Office

New Office

Things are looking OK. I like my office. It's in a quiet wing, probably one of the toughest areas of this building to get to if you don't know your way.

The window faces an alley that goes between M-lot and campus. I can't quite see the Student Life Centre volleyball courts, though.

I'm going through a bit of disorientation this afternoon, as nothing's where it's supposed to be, and I need to get all my office junk back from home. Also, windows desktop frustration: none of my linux shortcuts work. No multiple desktops! No klipper multiple-paste buffers! No cygwin shell yet. Sigh.

Ah-HAH! I know where your office is!

*grin* I tried describing the location more conventionally, and decided it's a common enough corridor people will know it by this description.

Actually, I didn't even notice the description. But I did notice the view from your window :)

Well then, I'm impressed, you must know that brick wall pretty well. :)

*puffs on an imaginary cigar*
That wall and me, we had some good times... But a gentleman never tells!

Nice office!

I'm trying mightily (and mostly succeeding) to restrain sniggering at the Windows desktop that's plain behind you though.

Don't suppose you could whine them into giving you a vmware license?

Nice LCD though, widescreen helps a bit to make up for lack of multiple desktops.

I'm positive there's got to be freeware multiple desktop stuff for Windows if you can't trick them into letting you run Linux though.

(Don't forget to use mirror for cygwin! :) )

"Don't forget to use mirror for cygwin!"

You betcha I did.

I'm not going to be stressed about vmware. Yet. Maybe in a few weeks.

And then there's my top-s33krit plan to get them to give me a linux dev machine, for running an up-to-date RT; then extending that to mail, and so on.

I like the monitor. It's 1600 wide, but not teensy text.

Multiple desktops: I found http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx which has a nice-looking virtual desktop tool. (Seems to me that I remember hearing window guys talking about this before.)

I also grabbed a visual-window alt-tab tool which feels positively mac-ish.

Ugh. I have one word to say: vmware. :-)

Other than the Windoze nightmare, the job sounds cool! I like the soothing color on the wall of the office. Get noise-cancelling headphones (or play music from those speakers) to drown out the noise.

I'm psyched for you!

Oo! See, any office would be a step up for me. :)

Looks like a nice office. And one hopes they'll let you have a nicer setup with the computer sooner rather than later.

[identity profile] sulle-stelle.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo....

How's it going??! Inquiring minds want to know!!!

[identity profile] da-lj.livejournal.com 2006-11-30 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hee hee. Happy to oblige. But I wish I had something exciting to say. I need to dampen the light over my desk, it's too glare-y. My boss(es?) need to get me a project soonish, because I'm just about finished setting up my work environment and I'm tired of running through demos in LabView. Maybe tomorrow!

My hall-mates are very friendly.

Don't stress about the new-job-without-projects-to-do-yet boredom. This will quickly pass.

Enjoy taking much time to manage such mundane things as modulating the light over your desk!

Oh, I do know it'll pass.

Today I'm enjoying the afternoon and filling my office with various pieces of equipment; mostly A/D hardware.

I'll post pictures Monday or so. :)
