If the sock matches others in my drawer, i toss the holey one, if not, i toss the pair. I fond old towels and the like are better rags than socks.
I have a very few pairs that i have darned by a friend, those ones are wool and useful sometimes in the winter, such as we have winter here; i've rarely used the wool ones since i lived in Boston - twice i think.
