If it's one a' them there nocturnal animals, you're better walling the place up in the middle of the night. Either that, or as late as you can possibly stay awake.
Have you got some bricks to go across the bottom, too? The ground is probably too frozen for them to dig through, but for skunks at least, any barrier needs to go down into the dirt for quite some distance to prevent them from just digging under it. In this weather, putting some heavy bricks across the bottom of the chicken wire (with the chicken wire lying on the ground) might help.
