Well, my idea was that a nocturnal animal wouldn't go back into the space if there was a bright light being shined on it when it tried to go home (whenever in the morning).
Yes, good idea about the bricks to hold down the chickenwire; I'll be sure to arrange it so that's possible. (not far to go for the bricks; a former house-owner seems to have used the area under the porch for spare-brick storage).
