Might be less geeky than you're looking for ;) but Skype is actually pretty decent. As I understand it you can set up yout smartphone to use it when you're close to an access point, and if you're not you can have it forward calls to your phone (I have not, I admit, invesitigated it seriously) What I do use it for works pretty6 well generally speaking..
