Arbitrary Thoughts
Saturday, 3 September 2005 10:36 amTaking a page from
dpolicar's journal, a few arbitrary (not random) thoughts.
1) I'd never heard of the song "30,000 Pounds of Bananas" before yesterday, not even once. But yesterday,
dpolicar and
lovecraftienne both referred to it, Dave in his journal, and Cait off-handedly over dinner at our place last night after somebody mentioned Scranton, PA.
2) The world's first Bluegrass Orchestra has returned to their Canadian roots yet again. The Snohomish County Bluegrass Orchestra was a tax dodge because US musicians otherwise needed to pay $450 a visit to play in Canada. The orchestra was formed out of (at least) 14 leading American bluegrass performers who wanted to play at a BC music festival. The law was rewritten in 2002, but the orchestra is still together. I like that. Especially this quote:
3) I've been playing with iTunes on Linux. It's a bit pokey sometimes, but my music sounds great, and even better, the podcasting and digital radio and music store's music sounds great too. It's not a love-affair yet, but this may be an acceptable stand-in for MusicMatch Jukebox, which I stopped using five years ago when I dumped Windows on my desktop. Yeah, my next computer will probably be a Mac too.
4) I hope the CBC lock-out ends quickly, but if it doesn't, cbcunplugged.com is apparently the top podcast out of iTunes Canada, according to the Globe and Mail. I wish them well.

Then there was the year Hudson thought the orchestra had been found out. A woman from Revenue Canada came backstage and handed Hudson her card. "I thought, 'Oh, my God. That's all I need.'" But she said she thought it was brilliant. 'I don't think it would stand up in court,' he recalls her saying. 'But I'll give you full marks for creativity.'
