this evening
Monday, 21 November 2005 09:47 pmThis evening, we considered going to a benefit dinner to help Indonesian tsunami victims and local homeless youth, organized by 15 local chefs.
Instead, we had dinner at a neighbour's house, with Lesley and her two kids. Lesley just returned from a writing retreat, and we had a bunch of catching up to do. I do wish that it didn't take us two years of living here before we got to know them; they would've made the first couple of years much less lonely.
You know the friends who feel more like family? That's this crew. Lesley's 45 and a published writer, smart but not nearly as know-it-all as my sweetie (as she puts it). A.'s 12 and a football-playing computer geek, and L. is almost 9 and reminds me a bit of Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird. (Indeed, a friend of the kids apparently said the same thing to Lesley last year.) Lesley's husband David is a computer guy, who I met when he was unicycling in the park with his daughter, two years ago. Great people.
