this 'n that
Monday, 2 January 2006 11:22 amI'm trying to enjoy my last day off before going back to work tomorrow, after I drive
melted_snowball to the airport at ugh-o'clock in the morning.
The holidays were spent at dan's parents' house; I enjoyed it there for the most part. They've just moved to Long Island, and the place they are renting is surrounded by little wooded parks (and a sizable nature preserve on a river). The neighbours all have light trucks/SUVs (plural, not singular) and the odd boat or classic car in the garage. My brain cannot fathom how expensive the houses themselves cost. It's more crazy than Somerville, where in some strange way, it makes sense to me that a three-story house would go for $750K. These suburban houses don't look nearly worth it.
We spent an afternoon and evening at my Uncle's house, with him, my Aunt (who has lived on LI for most of her adult life) and my Grandmother (their step-parent) who has lived on LI for a good fraction of her adult life. I talked for a while with my Grandma about why LI is so appealing to them. I guess it boils down to just "feeling like home" even though it keeps changing (getting ritzier in parts, losing the stores and landmarks of 20 years past).
My uncle's house is just down the road from a nature preserve which was dedicated to my grand-aunt Bet, and it's close to where she and her husband (my grandfather's brother) used to live. I suppose my family has been on Long Island for a while.
A big chunk of my time since we returned from Long Island has been spent categorizing photos from the last five years, which has been a lot of fun.
Dan and I have also been watching a lot of Muppets-- for Christmas, my mom got us a set of the first season on DVD. Four disks, 26 episodes. ...Who wants to come over for a Muppets night?
Last night we had
lovecraftienne &
persephoneplace for dinner; they is good folks, they is.
