On the Town

da: A smiling human with short hair, head tilted a bit to the right. It's black and white with a neutral background. You can't tell if the white in the hair is due to lighting, or maybe it's white hair! (Default)
We're in NYC! And d. and I keep looking at each other and saying, "Why don't we live here?" Then we remind each other, "Because we'd be broke in no time flat, and it would probably drive us nuts within six months." That said, it's a super place to visit.

So far:

Whiteouts to get to the airport, not fun at all.

Our hotel room has a kitchenette and access to a huge 4th-floor patio. Too bad it's chilly out there. Great views. I'll upload pictures, probably once we get home.

We're two blocks from the UN. We did the tour. So much 50s-era architecture and fixtures. Wow. Some of it's quite pretty, and we lucked out that nothing was in session, so we got to see everything. (Since the first Trade Center bombings, security's pretty tight.) Unfortunately, we learned that none of North by Northwest was filmed indoors at the UN. Fooey.

We met up with my mom, aunt, and uncle, and my uncle treated us to dinner downtown. The company was better than the food, honestly- everyone was on good behaviour, and my Aunt was only slightly outrageous. We talked about cousins, my brothers, and everyone congratulated d. on his tenure and me on my impending citizenship.

Since dan and I had been up since 5-something in the morning, we made an early night of it and cabbed back to the hotel (with my uncle, who lives nearby). It was neat to discover that he's actually a charming guy- I'd grown up with an impression that he was stodgy and grumpy; this was partly because he's grumpy around my father. But he likes my mom; and I get the impression he likes dan and me too.

This morning: we walked down to Macy's, where I did some candid photography (who watches the tourists? Me, that's who) and eventually wandered up to the Men's department, where I ran into d. trying on a suit. Not only did he find one that fit and was quite affordable, but I did as well, so we both own suits. Mine's a dark grey; d's is charcoal. I need to have mine fitted, but I can do that in Kitchener.

We met my mom at the Pierpont Morgan Library and Museum, which d. had been to before, but I had not. Another wow- so much concentrated wealth, and what an over-the-top house. The tour was well worth it. I wish I could've taken photos.

Ee, time to go- sushi dinner, then we have theatre tix for Avenue Q (and kudos to d. for discovering the tix were available online, for tonight.)
