Wedding in Boston

da: A smiling human with short hair, head tilted a bit to the right. It's black and white with a neutral background. You can't tell if the white in the hair is due to lighting, or maybe it's white hair! (Default)

M & A's Wedding Cake

It was a charming wedding. M & A have been together 15 years, and they decided now was the right time. Malia is becoming an Episcopal priest, next Spring- there were more clerical collars in the assembly of this wedding than any I've been to before. I liked their priest- she was a vibrant, very spiritful woman, who spoke a homily about walls that have lasted for hundreds of years without mortar; occasionally they will need patching, and it's crucial to get that patching.

She said, "Anybody here a fan of Mythbusters?... They addressed the Phone-book Myth- pulling apart two phone-books where each page is interleaved with the other's- you really can't pull them apart with less force than a pair of tanks. Surface area and friction. And she added, you could one-by-one unbind the pages of the phone-book to separate them, but in a relationship the married couple is responsible for working together to fix problems, rather than one-by-one taking the phone-books apart again.
They handled the diversity of the group in a way that felt occasionally challenging- there were portions that were pushing against my boundaries, but stayed on the side of "this is still OK." For example, they invited everybody up for communion, including those of us who haven't been baptized; you could signal whether you wanted communion or a blessing, either Christian or non-specific. And that was OK.

It was a small wedding- 60 people at the reception. Where, I would add, the food was great- as was the company. And there were Morris Dancers next door, who offered quite selflessly to crash the reception when d. and I went to check them out. Um, thanks, but... no.

One more photo here: the view from the airplane to the north- I have decided I really like flying over Autumn changing colours.

Last night we went out to dinner with [livejournal.com profile] bats22 in Arlington, which I hope to have oomph to write about later.
