A few years ago, Sue and I went through a Katharine Hepburn and Co. phase, where went back through a bunch of her stuff, and rented movies one or both of us hadn't seen (and some we'd both seen, but not for a while).
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is still a good movie, and hilariously funny, but definitely contrived.
In spite of it being a tradition at my college and in spite of living in the Philly area for 15 years, I'd never seen Philadelphia Story, so we watched that. As you say, the writers did a good job with what they were given for plot, but the folks who gave that to them were definitely smoking... something. :) Talk about contrived! But very funny.
