If you're looking for a lovely gallery that's rarely crowded, full of Old Masters and some *gorgeous* icon work from Orthodox churches, try the Courtauld. It's in the front gatehouse of Somerset House, if your cabbie doesn't know the place (I had to tell mine this when we went there). Also not very expensive.
