This week has seemed extra-long, becuase I thought it would be two days shorter with my trip to see my folks. I'll get the vacation days one way or another, but I'm a bit burned out this week. If the weather gets better tomorrow, I may go on Sunday through Tuesday. We'll see.

Yesterday afternoon, I took an hour in the afternoon and went to a visitation at the Funeral Home for the wife of a local Quaker. She was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma just two months ago and died three days ago. Her husband, understandably, is pretty devestated, but has lots of family around, which is good. I wish I'd gotten to know her better.

After work and my programmers club meeting, my wonderful sweetie came in the blinding snow to pick me up at the University. Had I realized how bad the weather was, I would've taken the bus- it took 30 minutes to drive home, with pretty tense driving. I hate to think how long it took the guy who lives down south near the 401.

Today... well, I spent most of it trying to recompile old programs to work with a new architecture and much newer tools. Urg.

One bit that was amusing; a co-worker asked me to check something on a computer he administers. I noticed it was running slowly, so I took a look at the running processes. Here's a paste from a chat session with friends:

15:38 <@daniel> wow. one of the machines (i'm not responsible for) I just
looked at has 11,000 zombie ssh processes
15:38 <@daniel> another one created every 3 minutes
15:39 <@daniel> 16GB ram, put well to use.
15:40 <@elbie> Raaaaaammmm!
15:40 <@elbie> RrrraaaaaammmM!
15:41 <@fish> 11,000 is a lot of zombies.
15:41 <@daniel> -=(brains)=-
15:41 <@fish> It's 1000 more than in the film Night of 10,000 Zombies.
15:42 <@daniel> hah
15:44 <@fish> I had more jokes, but I stopped.
15:45 <@elbie> Yeah. No sense in beating an undead horse.
15:51 <@fish> Not enough good zombie-horse movies.
15:52 <@elbie> You have no idea how often I say that.

Anyway, that tickled me.

This evening, [livejournal.com profile] melted_snowball and I had a wonderful meal and evening with [livejournal.com profile] lovecraftienne and [livejournal.com profile] persephoneplace. Warm fire, wagging dogs, and- and [livejournal.com profile] persephoneplace served us angelfood cake with rasberries, blueberries, and whipped cream! Wow. Life is good.
