da: A smiling human with short hair, head tilted a bit to the right. It's black and white with a neutral background. You can't tell if the white in the hair is due to lighting, or maybe it's white hair! (Default)

Gray weekend, gray Monday.

Last night, I picked [livejournal.com profile] melted_snowball at Pearson. (yay!) His flight was delayed, but it was delayed in advance so d. was able to call and tell me.

In the drive down (90km/h due to fog and rain, ugh) the ceeb was interviewing Ruth Reichl, former restaurant critic of the NY Times. Her latest book, Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise sounds totally neat. To avoid detection as a famous reviewer, she became adept at donning different personalities and roles (possibly to excess, says I). She got into it so deeply that she was exploring parts of her personality she would rather not have. But she also discovered how to channel her mother, an intensely demanding and difficult woman. Often, in persona, she would receive awful service at famous NY restaurants. Apparently she wrote one of her restaurant reviews with a side-by-side of: her persona's totally awful experience at the resteraunt, and her non-anonymous experience as they pulled out all the stops. I will be checking this book out.

d. told me about his visit to Boston, and it sounds like he was well-treated by [livejournal.com profile] dpolicar and [livejournal.com profile] earthling177. Thanks guys! And likewise by [livejournal.com profile] pekmez and [livejournal.com profile] zubatac. Sorry I couldn't be there too!

We spent a relaxing evening mostly at home (plus dinner at Pho Dau Bo).

In addition to missing him for all the delightful other reasons, I do miss my daily curmudgeon. I wound up in a laughing jag last night as he recounted all the things that were wrong with Jamba Juice. I think it was the image of him just trying to get his free smoothie sample and all the perky 20-something employees broke into song when "Brown Eyed Girl" came on. I can totally picture it.

This morning, I woke up with the birdies, just before 6. Hope I don't go thud too early; I'm looking forward to dinner with [livejournal.com profile] bats22 tonight.
