They turn out to be very different, unfortunately. It was possibly the most jarring thing about moving here, after living in both Ithaca and Boston, both of which have quite good NY style bagels.
Montreal-style bagels are smaller, have bigger holes, are eggier, chewier, and sweeter. I don't know if the wood-fired oven place you're thinking of is the one at Victoria and Strange (which we go to all the time), but while we like their bread very much, their bagels just don't match what we think bagels are.
