on early rising

da: A smiling human with short hair, head tilted a bit to the right. It's black and white with a neutral background. You can't tell if the white in the hair is due to lighting, or maybe it's white hair! (pink)

This morning's paper has an article about a new translation of Gilgamesh which claims it is actually a gay love story. Fun idea, though it would've been a better article if they'd also talked to a scholar who disagreed with the translator. I can't link to the Globe and Mail article (it's subscriber-only) and I can't find any balanced articles elsewhere with a quick google search, but at least here's an interview from the advocate.

I've been waking up early all week. Nothing serious, but it's a bit annoying to wake up at 5:00 for no good reason. d's been waking up in the night too; and I think these things feed off each other.

Yesterday I got tired of lying in bed worrying about my todo list. So I was an emailing fiend, getting out a batch of overdue emails I owed. I figured out some details for the syllabus of a quakerism 101 seminar I'm claiming that I'll lead starting next month. Then I got out of the house early, drove down to the Ontario Health Insurance offices, and renewed my health card.

At work, I knocked a few items off my todo list before noon... Well, sub-items. My work todo list is starting to look pretty bushy, items with pre-requirement items.

[deleted rant about an annoying software maintenance system nobody outside the university would care about, and few people in the university understand]

Anyway, work is going well, apart from the bushy todo list. I need to convince myself to leave in time to catch the bus, though- I've had some close calls recently. [Hm- I can have my computer turn on my monitor's power-saving mode at 5:05 and every minute there after... that sounds sufficiently annoying...]

Last night, while dan had a candidate dinner, I went out for drinks with my friend Eric. Fun.

Oh, and yesterday I also solidified plans for d's and my upcoming vacation to NYC, which I'm looking forward to. Feb. 24-27. It's been too long since I've been- five years; the last time was right before my grandmother moved in with my parents.

Was the rant about xhier? Do they even still use that? God, what a mess that would be to change. (I remember being highly annoyed that every shell script was csh, of all things.)

Oh, yes they are.

Xhier hasn't been actively developed in over a decade, yet it's still used campus-wide by IT staff.

You know the computer game "Katamari Damashii"? I think xhier is an exercise of accretion in a similar way. (rolling over people, then small buildings, then large buildings, etc).
