Twice since winter I've gone to Home Hardware for key-duplication. Twice, they've been cut by people younger than me. Twice, they've not been done right: the first time, he forgot to buff it afterwards so it was paper-cuttingly sharp, and the second time she seems to have slightly offset the base of the key so it's unusable. *frowny*

Bring back the old key-cutters! They always got it right on the first try.

Simple solution: go to Ron's Locks, Water and Weber, downtown Kitchener. Very knowledgable, experienced, locksmith-only, instead of some Home Despot drone. :)

*nods*

We bought our replacement locks there right after we moved here. They had the proper "grizzled locksmiths" demeanor down for sure.

..OTOH, aside from this key-cutting silliness, I like Home Hardware on Park Street (Beaver Lumber- they still hand out the painting hats to prove it). They have very friendly staff, and I still think they're an order of magnitude better than Home Despot, even after they expanded their store almost to the point of excess. It's still reasonably easy to find stuff there.

Dan's convinced I'm having an affair with them.

You always come home with a smile on your face, seeking more.

I don't go there daily, any more.

Need not there be young keycutters that there be a supply of old ones for the future?

"Need not there be young keycutters that there be a supply of old ones for the future?"

I was wondering who would point that out. :)

The newbie key-cutters don't have to start out young. My current belief is that the kids just don't have the attention for detail. Granted, their eyesight might be better.

When we went back, the (50s-ish) woman who recut the keys said, "yeah, that one is really bad."

Then, the newly cut keys didn't work either. I think their blank is slightly off (a 2mm-wider groove the length of the key).

I'm going to take it downtown to the locksmith [livejournal.com profile] lovecraftienne recommended above. :)

I've never had a problem getting keys cut at the Home Hardware on Weber just past University. And the one uptown Waterloo is pretty good, too.
