the weekend
Monday, 31 October 2005 01:46 pmThe Steve Reich concert in Toronto last night was wonderful. The sheer spectacle was one of the neatest aspects. Drumming had three marimbas and at one point nine players, five of them on one marimba; as well as three glockenspiels, 8 drums, two voices, and a piccolo. I've always enjoyed hearing parts of it (I can't sit through all 75 or so minutes recorded) but seeing it live was riveting.
Earlier, I had some good finds at a bookstore: "Specimen Days" by Michael Cunningham and "Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Foer. Both books made me quite happy to read, and I'm sure I'll get enough pleasure out of re-reading them to justify the splurge on hardcover. I also got the latest "Dykes to Watch Out For", since Allison Bechtel is a genius.
It seems the store owner was hitting on me and dan, which I didn't realize until after I'd had a fairly long conversation with him and he gave me a free copy of "Blue" magazine to go with my books. Which by itself would've been fine, but some stuff he asked was sort of creepy, especially to d. Eep. This happens to me- I never realize when somebody's flirting, rather than being quite friendly. Then afterward, I'm, like, "Oh! Huh."
Also: dan tried and failed to buy a coat, and our favourite standby for cheap tasty sushi (Sushi Time on Bloor) let us down with some pretty mediocre food. So, we need a new favourite Toronto cheap tasty sushi restaurant. Any suggestions?
