The Steve Reich concert in Toronto last night was wonderful. The sheer spectacle was one of the neatest aspects. Drumming had three marimbas and at one point nine players, five of them on one marimba; as well as three glockenspiels, 8 drums, two voices, and a piccolo. I've always enjoyed hearing parts of it (I can't sit through all 75 or so minutes recorded) but seeing it live was riveting.

Earlier, I had some good finds at a bookstore: "Specimen Days" by Michael Cunningham and "Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Foer. Both books made me quite happy to read, and I'm sure I'll get enough pleasure out of re-reading them to justify the splurge on hardcover. I also got the latest "Dykes to Watch Out For", since Allison Bechtel is a genius.

It seems the store owner was hitting on me and dan, which I didn't realize until after I'd had a fairly long conversation with him and he gave me a free copy of "Blue" magazine to go with my books. Which by itself would've been fine, but some stuff he asked was sort of creepy, especially to d. Eep. This happens to me- I never realize when somebody's flirting, rather than being quite friendly. Then afterward, I'm, like, "Oh! Huh."

Also: dan tried and failed to buy a coat, and our favourite standby for cheap tasty sushi (Sushi Time on Bloor) let us down with some pretty mediocre food. So, we need a new favourite Toronto cheap tasty sushi restaurant. Any suggestions?

Thought: when a bookstore owner gives you a free porn magazine, he probably is hitting on you.

I like Sushi Inn on Cumberland for inexpensive sushi. However, I've only had the veggie sushi, and I'm not very picky when it comes to sushi.

Hmm, I haven't listened to "Drumming" in ages. I should go dig it out...

Yes, DTWOF is great. I was inordinately proud when Alison Bechdel made reference to a web site I maintained with a friend about radical cheerleading in one of her strips :)

Wow. That's worth being proud of! ...Definitely cooler than being the (nominal) website maintainer for Firebrand Books, which doesn't have much of a relationship with Alison Bechdel any more.

Do you know roughly what time period the radical cheerleaders appear in (hence, I can figure out which book) that's in?

If not, I can try and ask in <lj user="dykes2watchout4" :)

You did work for Firebrand books? That's pretty neat.

The strip came out in late 2001 or early 2002, I think... not sure. The reference was one of those "tip of the nib" comments in the margin.

The website was on Geocities (http://www.geocities.com/radicalcheerleaders/), but some god damn fucking asshole guessed the password one day and I haven't been able to log in since. The woman who actually created the account, and might have some small chance to convince Yahoo! to give her back control of the site, has been living off the grid in rural Florida for years now and I don't know how to contact her. So it's dead, despite being the top Google hit for "radical cheerleaders" to this day. Sigh... it was good while it lasted.

Ah, that's right, I remember you mentioning the geocities break-in. That's a shame all right.

I'll take a look for the tip o' the nib :)
