da: A smiling human with short hair, head tilted a bit to the right. It's black and white with a neutral background. You can't tell if the white in the hair is due to lighting, or maybe it's white hair! (Default)

I'm gonna get a postcard.

From Antarctica.

From this guy, who turns out to be a friend of friends in Perl programming circles. He's a programmer and sysadmin for the Halley Research Station. And he's actually in Antarctica. I'm chuffed.

[livejournal.com profile] alex_at_halley is a feed of his blog (minus the photos, unfortunately, which I think are the best part; but it will tell you when his site updates, at least).

There's a guy I know, but haven't seen from childhood (son of one of my dad's friends) who goes to Antarctica to do some kind of IT-related somethingorother. I'm guessing he would know your friend Alex. (I mean, how many of those people can there possibly be??!.....)

I sure don't know how many sysadmins there are in Antarctica- but there are over 248 Americans and 39 Brits in the wintertime, spread among 3 and 2 bases respectively. I don't know how much cross-talk there is between bases. But yeah, I bet there is some.

They're on crazy different time-zones, all with 15-hour days. :)

Does Antartica have its own postal system, with its own stamps and its own currency with which to buy those stamps? :)

There isn't a South Pole government, so no.

It seems from his address the British stations use British postal codes. To the Falkland Islands, with extra lines for the routing to the bottom of the Earth. :)
