Should I buy "I'm going away" doughnuts for the four coworkers in my area?

Monday is semi-officially my last day, and I don't start in CS until the 28th. Although I'm not sure how I managed to swing it, I am fairly happy about two weeks unpaid vacation. What should I do in it? I might visit my folks, though I did just see them, and I don't want to leave dan without a car, since he is in fact NOT going to China next week.)

I've got the head-cold I got rid of before I went to NYC (three countries ago, four if you count home). It seems to have lodged partly in my ears this time, which just sucked yesterday on the plane. The ears are mostly OK now, as are my sinuses partly, but I'm feeling really slow. Bleh.

A last bit of suckiness: Windows, why do you do this?

Finding programs on your All Programs menu can become difficult if you have a lot of programs installed. When you install new programs, Microsoft Windows XP adds each new item to the end of the All Programs menu. You can, however, quickly sort the items on your All Programs menu in alphabetical order.

Gee, I can't think of any reason that would be useful- partly alpha, partly installation-order. And you can't go back to installation-order either, which could be useful. Talk about lazy UI design.

...Did I mention how happy I am that my next work computer's gonna be a Mac?

I never use that view. I choose the classic view of Windows 98, and the put programs into sub-folders off that. If I ever uninstall one, Windows wont now where to find the program's folder or shortcuts, but I can easily remove it myself, and it keeps me organized.

The other issue is when the folder created by a program's installation doesn't match the name of the folder, but the maker. I have to know that Macromedia made Fireworks, etc. That's why I just stick my most used programs in my first start menu.

And dream that one day, I'll switch to Mac (or Windows will become more lile Mac since I need to use Windows to work from home).

Ditto. I upgrade every WinOS down to the lowest level I possibly can. Increased productivity since I know where things are, and I micromanage my Start->Program Files menus so everything is just a few known keystrokes away. Pretty much everything gets installed into Program Files->Junk, with shortcuts copied out as needed.

I'm still more productive under Windows than OSX or *nix, but I won't stop my polygamy. The grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, but if you own property across all fence lines...

We'd LOVE to have you visit while you're between jobs, but April 21 through April 28 is actually only one week, not two - and that horrid cold isn't going to go away if you don't give yourself a chance to rest up between travels, sooooo . . . . seems to me that a relaxed week at home enjoying the lovely spring weather we're finally having might be just the ticket. We can get together later in the summer - maybe in Ithaca again. Can you tell this is your mother speaking?

Hey, you're right! It was two weeks including the Europe trip. But yes, if I try to do two weeks of stuff before the 28th, that's a recipe for disaster. :-P

"Between travels": what else do you know that I don't? My next planned travel is FGC at the end of June. ;)

Ithaca some time this summer sounds like a great idea, too.

Nope. I guess you've heard it here first, since he hasn't posted in the last few days.

But he says his spidey-senses were tingling that it was a bad idea. Both personal (the lack of communication from them about a hotel) and being unhappy about going to China right now in general. He said he's learned from his Russia trip, which he ignored the spidey senses and regretted it.

I'd chat, but need to run out the door. (Busy weekend -- I spent most of last weekend lounging around the apartment, with nothing to do at all. This weekend is a total whirl. Why is that?)

David E. is in China right now, on some combination of work and W3C stuff. Last night I asked David F. how David E. was doing, and he said "tired" (had gotten an email from him).

You know, I have a theory.

Time is lazy. It is Time's principal job to keep everything from happening at once. Quite often, Time just sucks at that job, and... the predictable happens, like your weekend, or my recent week when my boss came back from China, I accepted the new job and gave notice, within two days.

That's my theory.

This weekend, I:

• went to a party on Friday night;
  
• ran errands on Saturday morning;
  
• drove to St. Pete to meet up with some friends at an art show there (80 degrees, sunny, nice breeze, on the water, with bands playing -- totally fab);
  
• left that early to run home, shower off all the sweat and sunblock, change, and drive another half hour to get to a 4pm concert by the Tampa Bay Master Chorale, who had famous composer Alice Parker in residence, with a world premier piece;
  
• blew off a Saturday evening party because I just couldn't;
  
• went to a work thing at my boss's house on Saturday afternoon;
  
• left that early to go to a cocktail party/fundraiser for the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation;
  
• followed by dinner and coffee with David F.

*laughs* Sounds like you had fun, at least.

My weekend sounds a bit more mundane in parts:

- had dinner Friday with d&J
- spent an evening outside in the glorious weather,
- cleaned dog shit from the yard,
- worked on stuff for the three local quaker committees I'm clerking (sheesh) (wedding care committee, half-yearly meeting committee- next Saturday!, and peace and social action committee)
- went to business-meeting & lunch with 'quakes
- did 10 miles on my bike (errands, Quaker Meeting)
- decided we weren't going to commit to a new condo here because I'm not ready to move by next summer,
- sat down with d. and figured out a long number of small home-improvement projects
- cleaned off my desk of doom,
- took out three feet of recycling (boxes)
- awful sushi buffet
and
- bed before 11 each night, because I'm still not sleeping well with my lingering head-cold.

Needed more nap.

Macs are good.

Macs that run Windows programs are handy. You still have to put up with Microsoft, but it's not quite as irritating as on a Windows machine.

I'm such a convert. Which is really funny, b/c way back in the mists of time, Apples are what I started on. [Of course, this was before Macs... (as she hobbles off into the sunset) *snort*]
