I just got spam. In iCal. I haven't had time to figure out how the hell it got there, but it's a bit of a surprise. Its recipient is... my non-gmail address, but it has a google calendar link at the bottom. Hm. The only action on my part was to confirm in ical that my address belonged to me. And then they appeared in the "notifications" pane.

[edit to add: Ah, I see. it's a convenience feature of mac mail and ical. If my email contains an .ical event notification, it will add it without asking me. iCal preferences... "Advanced" preferences... *untick*]

Also: what's up with friends moving away shortly? Was it something I said?

My friend Michael is imminently moving to Alberta; he told me on the weekend (calling from Alberta).

[livejournal.com profile] ferdzy and her partner Karl are quite possibly moving to Owen Sound this summer. At least 50% possibility, according to K. Higher chance if they can sell their business.

I think that's quite enough of that. No more moving further away. You're only allowed to move closer. (With the proviso that my parents are welcome to move to Ithaca, whether or not it's any closer to here... (and it even is closer, by 50 miles.)) Got it? Good.

sigh. I would love to move closer.

Heh. I was even thinking about you when I wrote that, as a possibly-might-eventually-move-closer. Not that I've ever actually visited Portland, but I haven't been anywhere in Texas (outside DFW) either. ;)

We're thinking about staying even longer in Texas so that Charles can go to a state school for his next degree (he only has three right now). It's sad, especially as summer approaches, but I want to be supportive. On the other hand, I've been desperate to live anywhere else since I was in my teens.

Charles was actually talking about Vermont the other day, which isn't exactly near you, but closer. And of course we ALWAYS talk about Canada, it's just usually BC we dream about.

I've been trying to talk Linda into Alberta or possibly BC for a couple of years now. Do I get a grandfather clause?

Upside: no more Waterloo.

Downside: I actually *like* my job, and suspect finding even a similar position elsewhere just Wouldn't Be The Same.

You're aloud to talk to Linda about it. You're not allowed to actually move.

[livejournal.com profile] ferdzy and K were talking about moving to BC, Alberta, or up north for a few years as well. [livejournal.com profile] melted_snowball does point out that this isn't the first time they've told us it was going to be imminent, either. So I guess you're even allowed to tell us you're moving, as long as you don't.

We're extremely unlikely to be going anywhere until SB is on her own, not that it stops me from dreaming of the promised land with people who don't think that going less than 20km/h over the limit is driving too slowly and who keep their traps shut when they see a 30something in a handicapped spot.

Um, sorry. :(

It will make me sadder to be further away from you two.

And I'm well aware there will be things I miss about where we are now (being three blocks from the canoe-and-kayak rental place, for example). However, my overall sanity will definitely be increased by no longer living in this area. And then, a year later, it will be increased further by being back in the Delaware Valley.

The fact that y'all are less than a day away has definitely been lovely.

Well, you guys are forgiven, the first one's temporary and the second one's the Quaker Vatican. And thirdly, I think there should be an overall exemption for leaving Michigan. ;)

Whew, thanks.

Yeah, you're right... there really ought to be an overall exemption for leaving Michigan!!!

Only, didn't we figure out that if dan does his next 6-month sabbatical in Philly, you'll still be in Seattle? (roughly July-December '09)...

Hmph. :P

What?? OMG, that would be too great.

Sue starts at Pton in 08/09.

!!

I had no idea dan had another 6-monther coming up, and I really had no idea he's considering Philly. (Is this b/c I'm behind in my reading?) Where in Philly? This is great!

Maybe we could all take over the Quaker Vatican... heh heh hee hee.

Aha! Now we're talking.

I might have reconstructed the memory that I told you at Winter Gathering. I know I told Carrie and she was quite bouncy about it. :)

Where: ionno- still up to d, still up in the air. I'm hopeful!

This is great. Especially if you get to come-with or visit frequently!

Carrie burst into tears at Mid-Winter when I told her we'd be back in the area in 08/09. Which nearly made me cry, too.

It will be so good to have real family around us again!!

More like nov '09 to apr '10. (AKA, "fuck you, Canadian winter.")

I've met a couple folks at Penn, but what I'd most like to do, honestly, is teach my 400-level course at Swarthmore and see how it goes. We'll see.

Particularly Grand Rapids. Poor [livejournal.com profile] lostncove seems really miserable there.

Spam as a convenience feature. Hmmm. Yeah.

It seemed a particularly Microsoftian touch: the assumption that you trusted your inbox to not have malicious ical events sent to it.

A much more mac-ish solution would be: if you click on the ical attachment in Mail, it will open iCal and ask: "you opened this from Mail. Do you want to make this happen automatically in the future?"

Too bad I don't work for Apple. ;)

As much happier as I am on my Mac, I'm finding myself even more irritated than ever at the MS products I use... particularly on the Mac. We have a mini, which theoretically does both. Usually, it's fine. It's just that the... contrast... between Mac user experience and MS user experience gets so much sharper when running MS products on a Mac!

*shudder* I sure know that dance from my linux/windows days.

Curious: what MS products do you need? if it's office, have you tried Pages? My understanding it does pretty well. (I haven't yet; NeoOffice is a bit clunky but it seems to meet my needs well enough. And it's better than Word' 07!).

No fair! No talking about everyone moving to Philly while I'm down here!!!

(Summer is arriving. The humidity is slowly starting to build back in, after months of dry air. High of 90 today. I will be ready to flee by vacation time. I have the time off for FGC, but don't think I'm going to go. I'm thinking, about going somewhere else instead, but don't know where, exactly. Somewhere with cooler weather. P'Town? Maine? Montreal? Vancouver? Norway? Thoughts? Ideas?........)
