Saturday, 20 August 2005 03:32 pmWhat have I been up to, other than being sick?
(To begin with, I'd like to thank the pharma industry for bringing us Acetaminophen, Robitussin, and antihistamines. Otherwise, this week would've been a boring coughy mess.)
Wednesday, I visited with my former business-partner Jason, who's now a researcher at Microsoft, who was in town for a conference at the University. It was a lot of fun; he still cracks me up, and he's still interested in many of the same things we used to talk about. We had dinner and made a reasonably early night of it. We both wished we were better about keeping in touch; we both promised to try and visit, though it was at least four years since the last time. Which really felt like too long.
Thursday morning, I talked with the contractor who was replacing our retaining wall; he was going to build a trellis to replace the hideous thing that used to anchor a downspout. He sounded like he knew exactly what we wanted, and sure enough, when I got home Thursday night after he finished, it was exactly like he described, and sooo much nicer than the old downspout. Our neighbour has already hired him for some additional work, and we'll probably try to get him to do a bit more for us next year too. I also made a freecycle post to get rid of the leftover parts of the old wall which he didn't reuse when making the new wall.
Thursday afternoon my co-workers and I celebrated the passing of the reins of Dictator^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Director for my group at work. The outgoing Director took us go-kart racing. Yeah, I should've skipped this one, it was an hour in the sun that I didn't really need. But it was fun, and I felt fine while doing it. Even my ankle, which I managed to twist that morning somehow.
After work, I went to a barbecue at Chez Elbie, which was neat because I hadn't seen his place yet, a condo in the basement of a converted school building. Good conversations, mostly about summer vacations we've had. I may have wowed folks with my stunning luck at twisting my ankle while having a cold while having a sunburn. Afterward,
melted_snowball picked me up and we went for drinks with a friend from Ithaca who was in town for a Violin-teaching gig. Which I enjoyed, but I was frankly a bit tired.
Friday, I got in to work quite late. The biggest excitement was probably watching the radar map and waiting for the tornadoes, which didn't hit here, but did come rather close, 30ish miles away. I hoped to go home early, but such was not to be, but the evening was quite nice because d. made a yummy roast chicken dinner with noodles and roast beets. Yum.
I was coughing a bit in the evening, and rather than keeping d. up, I camped out on the couch. Which was OK, because Rover kept me company. ...Around 4, I woke up with no interest at all in sleeping further. Rgh, what's up with that. I considered going for a walk, but instead noodled in other peoples' livejournals. After an hour, I was sleepy enough to go back to couch.
Today, we had a nice visit and dim sum lunch with Kohta, and I trimmed branches in the yard and fixed the toilet and sink. I didn't manage to mow the lawn, which I'd hoped to do, but I really didn't have the energy for that.
Tomorrow, I have my last session of Quakerism 101 that I'm teaching, then I do a bit more house-cleaning before d. returns with Sharon and Mark. Sharon's a great old friend of his from MIT, and Mark's her nearly-8-year-old son, officially d.'s nephew. I'm looking forward to being an uncle for a few days; we haven't seen them in almost three years, which is just too long.
