Monday, 3 October 2005 09:28 pmWe went to Ithaca last weekend, because dan's graduate alma mater (and my undergrad) was having a party for the CS department's 40th anniversary. Oddly enough, there wasn't cake at the banquet; but there was good tiramisu. There were also: two Quakers dressed head to foot in tie-dye (*); plus one of my oldest university friends; plus one of my favourite classmates in couple of senior-level classes I took, who (I'd forgotten) was the spouse of a CS professor. Whew. I didn't expect to see any of these people on this trip, and I had great fun catching up with each of them during the banquet.
I got some great photos of Rover posing on the Cornell Arts Quad. She's a super dog, but a miserable hunter. There were some squirrels who were so tame they didn't understand Dog. "What's that big thing coming my way? Maybe if I sit still it won't see me? Rats, my tail is shaking. RUN!" ...at which point Rover somehow manages to miss even getting close. It was pretty pitiful. Yet quite entertaining. Does that make me a bad owner?...
The cabin we rented at Taughanock Falls was super, especially since we had an air-mattress and we borrowed a sleeping-bag from our friends to supplement the quilts we brought. It got down to a respectably nippy mid-50s at night. But- there was hot water and flush toilets. So I have no complaints.
I hope to get photos online... some time soon.
(*) There are odd connections between Bowen and Robin (who are lifetime Quakers) and dan and I (who both are not), going back... oh, about 60 years. Robin's family lived in Watertown NY, as did my dad as a child. When Robin's family went away to Quaker conferences, the family dog stayed with their neighbour, who was my father's aunt. The same aunt also took care of my dad for a few years when he was quite young. My father and Robin's father were friends as adults; I believe they re-discovered the neighbours coincidence after they became friends. About a decade ago, I got to know Bowen and Robin... and we got to re-discover these things all over again.
