Meh.

da: A smiling human with short hair, head tilted a bit to the right. It's black and white with a neutral background. You can't tell if the white in the hair is due to lighting, or maybe it's white hair! (Default)

I saw d. off at the airport early this afternoon, which was both easier and harder than I expected. One of our friends asked if we (I) would be going nuts over this; I'll have to say, no I won't. It helps immensely that d. isn't at all sentimental (he'd say, maudlin). It's still tough, but we're both adults.

No question but this will be something new for me- I haven't lived alone for quite a long time, for more than a week or two. I've got evening activities scheduled for a few nights this month, and I'll probably schedule some more as I figure out how social I wanna be.

Anyway, after driving back through some thick highway fog, (not too scary), I went back to work from my brand new office. I had the fun of hearing [livejournal.com profile] elbieinwaterloo and [livejournal.com profile] joymoose talking to Dr. [livejournal.com profile] thingo just outside my door, and opening it right onto them and joining the conversation. Joymoose: "But... But... Why are you in that office?" Me: "It's an elaborate practical joke. Did it work?" (Or some such.)

The ceiling fluorescents flicker and buzz. I hope facilities can fix it soon, because just in the space of a few hours this afternoon, it's given me a headache.

For the curious, I switched offices because the guy I replaced for 2005 came back, and my boss and I both wanted me to continue. This new office is far from my colleagues. I'm vaguely worried about how remote it is, since I did keep my door open in the old office and the hall-conversations were generally useful. Now, I have to listen to those Graphics profs, whose conversations are bound to be... Oh, wait- one of them reads my journal. Scintillating. That's what I wanted to say... Yeah.

But this feels a bit like working remotely from home did, where most of my contact came from chat-rooms and email. I will definitely switch to having lunch in our common-room, and maybe I should start scheduling meetings with co-workers solely for the sake of seeing them. And I'm sure that will go over well.

...I hope to know by the end of February; it depends (as always) on budget considerations.
