Ieeeee

On my bike home, I was listening to a This American Life episode about someone who got dicked over by MCI for ten months over a billing mistake. Sad story. Lead into:

ieeee the first:

When I got home, stuck to the door was a note saying the gas people had come by for their scheduled service replacement of the regulator outside the house, and since I wasn't here, they shut off the gas in order to do it. Can I call this number to have the gas turned back on. Shit.

Yes, I made the appointment, maybe a month ago, and yes, I am pretty sure I wrote it down (in my log, and in google calendar). But I can't find it in either, so I have to assume they were right.

I called the number, and he said he'd be over in 20 minutes. *whew* That would've been a crappy reception for [livejournal.com profile] melted_snowball if he came home to no gas stove. (crossing fingers the gas guy actually shows up).

[edit: he came, and was the nicest gas person you could ask for. He says he has done a lot of this, what with people unable to take an afternoon off work to be home for this. Um, yeah. But he was leaving for vacation for the weekend tomorrow, and he didn't want to leave us without gas, so he showed up at 8pm.]

ieeee the second:

On the answering machine was a message from the 2006 Canadian Census people, telling me I absolutely need to send in the form they left me, they came by this morning and I didn't leave it for them.

That's because yesterday I called them to say I had filled it out online, and gave them the confirmation number from the website, which I got when I filled it in the second time when they apparently lost the first time. Also after I called the 800 number listed on the forms they left for me, and they said I should give the confirmation number to the local people.
So I guess I'll call them back, and apologize for making them come on out here, but didn't they get my phone message yesterday? [Edit: Oh yeah, the reason I should care: "failure to fill out the census makes you liable for a fine of up to $500 and/or imprisonment of up to three months". And here, when I filled it out the first time, the reason I cared was because it's an important civic duty...]
