Sunday, 24 July 2005 07:23 pmFriday night we drove to Elora again for a Patrica O'Callaghan concert, which was wonderful. d. and I discovered her at the Open Ears festival in May. She's a classically trained musician, with a beautiful voice and an intelligent choice of subject matter. If I were to classify the music, I'd describe it as high-quality cabaret.
This concert had songs by Kurt Weill, Leonard Cohen, Sonny Bono, and others, in English, French, Spanish, German, and Ladino (the medieval Sephardic language). She sang Hallelujah as an encore, which literally sent chills down my spine. I bought her latest CD, which has one song I enjoy tremendously, Tonight We Fly.
"And when we die / Oh! will we be that disappointed or sad / If heaven doesn't exist / What will we have missed / This life is the best / We've ever had."
I spent yesterday afternoon learning about running an internet telephony server, at a hands-on workshop covering Asterisk. It was taught by my friend Simon Ditner. I was glad to be part of arranging for this to happen. It was time well spent; at this point, we only learned how to set up an expensive answering machine, but there are lots of potential interesting directions where this can go. Asterisk is roughly at the point where Linux was in 1994, and it has great possibility for turning telephone networks into just another part of the computer network.
Later in the afternoon, I met d's friend Kohta, who told us all sorts of Structural Engineering things about our house over dinner. All in all, a fun time. Then, I met
quingawaga at her combination birthday / divorce party.
Today was mostly relaxing; running a few errands and such. The wet weather got me down, however, because I'd hoped to go canoeing this weekend. Ah well.

Date: Monday, 25 July 2005 01:22 pm (UTC)Not a single glitch, so far as I know. Oh, one of the room's hubs didn't have DHCP on it, so we had to run an ethernet cable to one of the other hubs. That was the worst of it.
One of the participants brought a camera, which may have captured the glorious mess of the room half-way through the seminar; there was ethernet, phone, and power cables running every which way, as well as half of Simon's home network and a small telco-room's worth of stuff stacked on a centre table.
We even managed to put everything in the lab back the way it was when we were done.
