We're going to see a gay movie with the Quakers on Friday. It seems that whenever our Quakers have a movie night, it's always gay. They mention something gay at every Meeting. Like, the building they've (bought)moved into used to be a black church, and then a gay black church. When Charles and I first introduced ourselves, several people came up and basically told us how much they like gay people.
btw, we've been going to Meeting again. We thought we might go the the general conference thing in Pennsylvania, but we really really can't afford it. But our Meeting (is that how you call it?) is having a Quakerism 101 soon and we're really looking forward to it.
morgan_starfire has a good point- FGC does have great fin-aid and work-grants. The first time we went, melted_snowball and I worked on setup/teardown in exchange for something like 1/2 the registration fees, and we got some money for travel, matched by our Meeting... Just to make a little nudge in case you do feel like it's something you'd love to do if only there was the money to go...
Though I hear that second "really"- and this year just might not be the right year.
But then I'd get to meet you! ;)
Hope the Quakerism 101 sessions go well. They can be really great, and fairly intense discussions. Our tiny Meeting got a lot out of hosting them...
Maybe next year. We'll get through the 101 for now. I've already been asked onto the "committee" that takes care of the kitchen area and also to organize the quilting. They remembered me asking about the quilting a couple years ago when we started attending sporadically.
I love love LOVE how Quakers are so big on handiworks. Just about every time I've seen riverrocks IRL, he's had darning-needles in his hand. Hm, almost ditto for morgan_starfire, though she's often busy with non-crafts responsibilities, and fyddlestyx has a knitting blog.
Someone has started bringing her knitting to Business Meeting locally, and it makes me quite glad- I have happy memories of many Queer Quaker business sessions including the above people with their knitting and darning... :)
