My mom apparently sent me two emails, one on Friday, and one this morning, concerning some important family stuff that I've been waiting for.

I had a anti-spam filter that explicitly killed these messages, based on the email subject.

I'm just lucky I emailed her at noon asking whether she had any news, and we caught up from there.

*sigh* The timing could've been worse, though, if I'd not decided to check with her today at all.

Pseudoephedrine == bad juju for me. It's been long enough that I've not taken it, that I decided I'd give it another try. Dumb, dumb.

Side effects may include (more common) Nervousness; restlessness; trouble in sleeping; (less common) dizziness or lightheadedness; fast or pounding heartbeat; headache.

Yup to all of those.

At least I'm not hallucinating. Though, y'know, the nervousness is really frustrating.

From the last time I was stupid enough to think I needed Sudafed, I should come down in an hour or two.

How to make [livejournal.com profile] roverthedog very happy:

1) remove 1+ litre of duck-stock from the fridge. Notice it seems to have a nice thin layer of fat on top.
2) put stock pot on stovetop
3) tip stock tupperware over the pot. Notice the fat is thick enough that it's not pouring.
4) tip juuust a bit more, so the stock breaks through the fat, falling all at once into the pot
5) watch stock fly out of the pot, onto stove, shirt, floor.

After I stopped cursing, I poured it back into the tupperware, and it was only a small volume that ended up elsewhere than the pot. But boy, what a mess.

Rover was quite helpful as far as she could reach.

Where'd I go?

I'm quite glad to be done with the work week. I was able to finish everything I wanted to by this evening, so I won't think about work at all this weekend (I had many nights this week when this was not the case; trying to puzzle out an answer when I should've been sleeping). Aside from the annoying bits, there were some good puzzles, too; partly solved by reasoning, and partly by slugging through all the possibilities. (The most annoying of those involved copying a working computer's /etc tree onto the broken one, noticing that the broken one worked when it booted with the good /etc tree, and half-by-half, adding more of the broken files until it stopped working again. Bingo: it was Herr Doctor /etc/udev in the parlour, with a rules.d ! I'm glad there was nobody in the lab when I solved that, because they would've been put off by my cheering..)

The most satisfying problem was actually solved by: asking a student. Seriously.

I also had one moment of sub-genius that I think was funny enough to share. One bug's fix required logging out anybody sitting at the terminals. There was only one guy in the lab, so I carefully figured out which machine he sat at and ran it remotely on all the others. All of the monitors, except for his, flashed and restarted Xwindows. Including my own. Oops. (the reset wasn't interrupted part-way when mine logged me out, because it was running elsewhere via a 'screen' session, which wonderfully saved all my work and notes. So it was a minor inconvenience, more just amusing.)

This evening I also took a moment before leaving to talk to my boss's boss, who sent me an email earlier asking about the status of my current second-priority project, which I can now make a first-priority again; I'm glad I did because I thought he might've been grumpy about the status, but instead he congratulated me for getting this stuff done.

Now that the dust has settled, I can maybe pay a bit of attention to you all. I've missed you this week!

Arrived early on Wednesday, successfully navigated the trains from Gatwick to London, found my hotel with absolutely no problem, looked once again at my ticket to discover HOLY F*CK my return ticket was for 16 April, not 9 April! One phone call to the airline later, I'm a chunk poorer, but at least I'm going home the same week I expected to. Ugh. I can only blame my own stupidity. Because even if I didn't make the original mistake while ordering, I certainly received confirmation emails from the airline which contained the dates in question. Ugh.

So far: I can still recommend Zoom Airlines. The original fare (ahem) was cheap enough, and they served two meals (sort of): a sandwich at 11pm, and a full hot breakfast: omlette, hash-browns, a slice of tomato, a fresh fruit cup, a pretty-good roll and butter, and tea. Points to them.

The hotel room is smallish but quite servicable, and has wifi.

Yesterday, I hung around the room until d. showed up, the we went touristing for the afternoon (down near Trafalgar Square) and ate dinner at a gastro-pub.

Hm. I'd write more, but we should go eat as it's 7:30. Later! (and no, I don't believe that I could qualify for [livejournal.com profile] boutell's "I'm too tired to blog about Europe" contest...)
